Analytics, Modeling and Simulation
We create mathematical models of the real world to explore the effects of decisions. The complexity and array of information available to business and government clients is often overwhelming, and good decisions require techniques beyond rules of thumb, intuition and gut feel. The role of business analytics is to interpret data, and turn it into business knowledge to better inform decision-making.
- Risk analysis
- Demographic analysis
- Experimentation and Simulation
- Resource management
- Data mining, including database design and development
- Customized mathematical approaches, including linear programming, non-linear optimization, statistical analysis, network analysis and queueing theory
We aim to provide affordable analysis and advice, based on relevant data, to assist business and government clients to maximize their return on investment, meet their goals, and find optimal solutions to complex problems.
- Work with you to better define the problem
- Determine data collection requirements
- Determine the appropriate tools and techniques
- Perform the analysis
- Make evidence based recommendations
The range of problems that can benefit from Business Analytics/Operational Research is vast, but they have the common property that their complexity makes them difficult to solve. Some of our past projects include:
Maritime Vignette Simulation: What happens when two naval forces clash? How prepared is one fleet to confront an opposing force? AOR Solutions created the Maritime Vignette Simulation to model the result of the clash of two opposing forces without actually having to fire a shot.
Hospital Waiting Times: Who wants to wait when they need medical attention? Analyzing queues is a major application of Operational Research. AOR Solutions created a model of the transition of patients from the emergency department through admissions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown that allows administrators to prepare for tomorrow without waiting for the next crisis.
Signal Processing Failure: What happens when a computer chip gets overloaded? How much of the signal gets through, and how much gets discarded?AOR Solutions conducted a mathematical analysis of the situation, providing a set of equations that allows designers to optimize performance, or enables buyers to determine if their needs are met.
Vehicle Tests: New vehicles are introduced into the marketplace every year. In fact, there are more vehicles introduced than can be tested against safety standards. How do you choose the best vehicles to test? How many do you have to test? AOR Solutions conducted a mathematical risk analysis to determine how to select vehicles to optimize the safety testing.
Vancouver Olympic Security: Security was a major issue for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and the RCMP played a major role. However, providing the transport, housing, and meals for each member required to provide that security was very expensive. AOR Solutions determined shift schedules for required personnel to minimize the overall cost while ensuring security requirements were met.
Foreign Exchange Risk: The Department of National Defence purchases large quantities of material from foreign sources, and payments are usually due in foreign currency. Fluctuations in currency values can cost millions of dollars. AOR Solutions created a system that analyzes typical currency fluctuations and forecasts potential risk to the department, thereby better allowing for contingency planning and preventing surprises.
School Bus Route Planning: School boards can realize major savings by transporting students efficiently between their homes and school. AOR Solutions created an optimization package customized for use by school boards which was incorporated into a commercial school bus management software, now being used to provide savings by minimizing the distance school buses have to travel.
